This recording entitled “Lorenzo Perosi (1872-1956)” was recorded by the Cappella Musicale Pontificia “Sistina”. “Lorenzo Perosi (1872-1956)” is a project that includes two milestones in the work of Don Lorenzo Perosi. “Missa pro defunctis”, composed for the funeral of Pope Leo XIII. It is a colossal score, composed by Perosi in a few days, under the pressure of the pain felt for the disappearance of the great pontiff; a large and monumental music, designed to solemnize a rite which, until Pope Saint John XXIII, took place according to the form of the famous “novendiali”, i.e. nine days of solemn funeral celebrations in suffrage of the deceased pontiff.

His “Mottets”, many of which are short, very delicate and light as “watercolours”, and at the same time intense, are among his most performed compositions still today by liturgical choirs and beyond. As an example, let us consider the short motet “Ave maris stella”. The piece, in D Major, predominantly homonymous, transmits Perosi’s unmistakable compositional style and musical language, mixing different elements in a natural way, in addition to Gregorian inspiration.

 

Questo lavoro discografico intitolato “Lorenzo Perosi (1872-1956)” è stato registrato da Cappella Musicale Pontificia “Sistina”. “Lorenzo Perosi (1872-1956)” è un progetto che comprende due pietre miliari dell’opera di don Lorenzo Perosi. “Missa pro defunctis”, composta per i funerali di Papa Leone XIII. Si tratta di una partitura colossale, composta da Perosi in pochi giorni, sotto la spinta del dolore provato per la scomparsa del grande pontefice; una musica ampia e monumentale, pensata per solennizzare un rito che, sino a Papa San Giovanni XXIII, si svolgeva secondo la forma dei celebri “novendiali”, ossia nove giorni di celebrazioni funebri solenni in suffragio del pontefice scomparso.

I suoi “Mottetti”, moltissimi dei quali brevi, delicatissimi e leggeri come “acquerelli”, e allo stesso tempo intensi, sono tra le sue composizioni più eseguite ancora oggi dai cori liturgici e non solo. A titolo esemplificativo, prendiamo in considerazione il breve mottetto “Ave maris stella”. Il brano, in Re Maggiore, prevalentemente omonimico, trasmette il proprio inconfondibile stile compositivo e linguaggio musicale di Perosi, miscelando, in modo naturale diversi elementi, oltre all’ispirazione gregoriana.
